#Meet Record
**Resting due to back injury
1999 Season Chronology:
June 4-5, 1999
Karen took 2nd place in the California State Championships shot put with a throw of 48'0.25" This mark would have been good enough to take 16th in the NCAA Championships held at the same time in Boise, Idaho. It was a nice way to end this year's competition!
May 28, 1999
Karen won the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet, with a throw of 48'0.5". She is the top qualifier in the girls' shot going into next week's State Championship.
May 22, 1999
Karen won the Division II shot title at CIF with a throw of 46'1.25" and took 6th in the discus with 119'8". She is the top qualifier in the shot going into next week's Masters Meet by about 4 feet. The pin is out of her finger finally, and she's ready to throw far!
May 15, 1999
At CIF Division II Prelims, held at Mt. Sac, Karen was the top qualifier in the shot at 44'1". She also qualified in the discus, with a fourth place toss of 124'8".
May 6, 1999
Karen won the Northern League shot with a toss of 44'8" and took second place in the discus with a throw of 132', which is her PR. Karen had not thrown the discus since early March due to a lower back injury, but Arroyo Grande needed the points.
Medical Update: May 5, 1999
Well, the stitches are out, but the pin has another three weeks before Karen's broken finger is back in tip top condition. Karen is promising to move ALL the weights away from her station before she starts lifting....
April 24, 1999
Karen took first place in the San Luis Obispo County Meet shot with a throw of 44'3".
April 22, 1999
In spite of having surgery on her broken finger Monday night, Karen managed a 46'6.5" toss to take first in the dual meet against arch rival San Luis Obispo. So much for being excused from practice....
April 18, 1999
Somewhat disappointed in her mark at Mt. Sac, Karen went to work in the weightroom. Unfortunately, she managed to break her left little finger with a 45 lb. dumbbell. The injury required surgery. Fortunately, Karen is right-handed....
Walnut, CA
April 17, 1999
Karen took home a first place medal in the Invitational Division of the Girls High School Shot at the Mt. Sac Relays, with a throw of 45'6.75". She joins her Dad in the program's list of prior winners--Roger Freberg won the Boys Invitational Shot in 1970 for San Marino High School.
Arroyo Grande, CA
April 15, 1999
In a regularly scheduled home dual meet with Lompoc, Karen took first place in the shot with a throw of 46'5.5". Although Karen's back injury is improving, she is still not ready to compete again in the discus.
Arcadia, CA
April 10, 1999
Coming off a strained ligament injury that prevented any competition since March 27th, Karen took third place in the hotly contested women's invitational shot at the Arcadia Invitational. The top three finishers were separated by 5 inches, with Woodland's Jill Camarena taking first at 47'5", followed by Ohio's Rebekah Green at 47'4" and Karen's 46'11.75".
Santa Barbara, CA
March 27, 1999
Karen won the girl's shot put at the Santa Barbara Easter Relays, setting a new meet record of 44'11". This new mark replaces a former meet record dating back to 1981, the year before Karen was born.
Camarillo, CA
March 20, 1999
Karen took first in the girls' shot with a toss of 47'3", winning by a margin of about nine feet. This mark eclipsed the former meet record of 46'3" set last year by Karen's former teammate and 1998 CA State Champion, Stephanie Brown.
Santa Maria, CA
March 18, 1999
For the fourth meet in a row, Karen set a new shot PR. This time, Karen's mark was 48'5". Her second best throw was 48'4", and she had standing warmup throws of 45'+. In the discus, Karen won with a toss of 119'2". Her participation in the discus at next Saturday's Channel Coast Relays is questionable, pending evaluation of a pinched nerve that bothers her more in the discus than the shot.
Simi Valley, CA
March 13, 1999
Karen won the shot at today's Royal Relays, held at Royal High School, with a PR of 45'11". Karen did not compete in today's discus event, as each team was limited to three participants per event, and AGHS wanted to increase the number of athletes who could participate.
Saratoga, CA
March 6, 1999
Karen won both the shot and discus at the Mt. Pleasant Relays, held at West Valley College. Karen's 45'0.5" effort in the shot is a new PR.
Lompoc, CA
March 3, 1999
On a very cold and drizzly day, Karen posted a dual win over Cabrillo High School, with a new shot PR of 44'10.5" and a new discus PR of 126'1".
Los Angeles
February 13, 1999
Karen won the girls' shot with a throw of 40'11", and took 2nd place in the discus at 117'8" at the LA Invitational, held at USC on Saturday, February 13. The discus was won by state leader Cari Soong of Riverside.
